A cross country trip would not be complete without a visit to the most famous statue of all, Lady Liberty.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to America in 1886. It was a gesture representing friendship on France’s part. The completion of the statue was a joint effort, with the entire statue built in France and the pedestal created in America by Americans.
It surprised me to find out that construction teams from both countries were close to running out of money to fund their projects until both independently were able to devise ways to raise funds, which included micro donations of $1 from local citizens.
Over the years, the Statue of Liberty became the symbol of freedom, opportunity and the pursuit of happiness to the millions of individuals and families who risked everything to come to America for the chance to have a better life. Seeing Lady Liberty from distant shores meant that they had almost made it, that after months of being overseas, their chances for relocation in USA became within reach, pending an approval from government officials on Ellis Island.
I love our country so much.
