Photo taken at: Pine Ridge Reservation
How “home” looks like for Native Americans living on the 8th largest reservation in the nation.
Pine Ridge is the poorest jurisdiction in all of America, with an unemployment rate of 85%. We just don’t hear about the area in statistics because it’s not a US city.
I was numb driving through this reservation. Nearly every single piece of property had major signs of wear and tear as well as structural damage. This is how normal life looks like for the roughly 35,000 natives living on this particular reservation. About 15 miles from where the top photo was taken, is the site of Wounded Knee. The massacre that took place Wounded Knee was the last major battle between Natives and the United States.
