I don’t know how these small carts/local businesses stay in business. The cost of living and business expenses are not cheap.
It’s like competition among food vendors is driving prices down unless there’s some price collusion going on, which there absolutely is.
The competition between tenants aka demand for apartments is significantly raising rent across the board in the city and in nearby areas like Brooklyn and Jersey City.
The rational human in me understands the basic economics, but the ordinary person in me doesn’t understand the tradeoffs in terms of overall quality of life relative to other US cities.
